New plant-based protein facility receives finance from the Canadian government

A new protein pulling facility in Canada is to receive $100 million from the federal government it has been announced.

Merit Functional Foods will extract protein from peas and canola seed at a new plant in Winnipeg.

The financing comes from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s AgriInnovate Program, Farm Credit Canada, Export Development Canada, and Industries Canada.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said to the media on Monday:

“This facility will be a world leader in plant-based proteins and will create good jobs in a fast-growing field,”

“And by using 100 per cent Canadian inputs, it will also support farmers who produce the canola and yellow peas used in Merit’s products.”

Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, added in a press release. that the site, “not only give a competitive advantage in the global marketplace, they are creating jobs and adding value to our farmers’ commodities,”
